In a quiet office park in the upmarket suburb of Illovo, you’ll find a gem of a restaurant with a large glass front that allows tables to spill out onto the sidewalk under trees. Classically elegant but at the same time gloriously relaxed, Bellagio is the perfect place to linger for long, lazy lunches and dinners!

Last week, I decided to pop into this well-loved establishment for a quick lunch. I was instantly delighted by the gorgeous, shady outdoor area, which set the mood for a very much laidback feel. On the menu, you’ll find a number of tantalising options, each of which is paid immense detail. Starters include fresh oysters, ginger calamari with chilli and lime, or classic beef carpaccio. For mains, you can tuck into a perfectly dressed salad, popular seafood dishes, or a homemade fish pie.

While I perused my options, I ordered up a glass of Warwick “The First Lady” Chardonnay – one of my all-time favourite white wines. Bellagio offers an excellent wine list with extensive by-the-glass options. Wine lovers are truly spoilt for choice at this spot! For lunch, it was a toss up between the crab capellini (with ginger, coriander, white wine, tomato, chilli and a touch of cream) and the seared salmon (served on a bed of asparagus, new potatoes, roasted cherry tomatoes and salsa verde).

After much contemplation, my waiter convinced me to opt for the salmon, which he assured me would not disappoint. Within good time, my dish reached my table, and was simply but beautifully presented. I enjoy my salmon done very rare, which not many places get right, so I was eager to tuck in and see if it was done to my liking. All I can say is, “wow!” It certainly was! I enjoyed every last mouthful of the dish, which was fresh, flavourful and perfectly prepared.

Because I’d been told to best save room for dessert from the minute I arrived, I was keen to tuck into Bellagio’s decadent dessert menu next. I decided to go for something light and refreshing – the pink champagne sorbet (served on a bed of fresh seasonal berries). What a delight this unique dessert was – the perfect dreamy ending to what was a simply superb meal!

You can bet that I’ll be returning to this sophisticated spot soon to try out some of the other fabulous options on their menu, such as the poached salmon salad and the seared salmon done in a chilli, ginger, honey, soya and orange marinade. (Yes, I’m mad about salmon – I’m sure you’ve noticed!)

Darlings, Bellagio is a gorgeous spot to indulge in a meal that’s sure to impress you. To add, the ambiance is classy, and the service is top-notch, with passionate owner Louise constantly ensuring all-round quality. Go and try it out for a girls’ lunch, a romantic date night, or a special occasion – just be sure to book in advance.
