Darlings, if you’re anything like me, you’re particular about what you put on your plate. And if you think food that’s free from gluten, wheat, sugar, MSGs and preservatives is tasteless and expensive, think again – there’s a gem of a place tucked away in the heart of Joburg CBD by the name of Grain Food & Wood

Yes, it’s true – this amazing spot serves up healthy dishes that are fresh, flavourful and affordable! I visited Grain last weekend with a girlfriend of mine for a coffee and a bite to eat. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by one of the friendly owners, Laré, whose love and enthusiasm for this little business is infectious. Before talking us through the simple yet somewhat creative menu, she gave us a little background on Grain.

Grain was formed by two previously-existing companies – Gihon Foods and Woodlady. This trendy place set up shop in Maboneng, and serves as both a healthy eatery, as well as a retail spot and showroom for fabulous health food products by Gihon Foods, as well as the most gorgeous sustainable raw wood creations by Woodlady.

As soon as my friend and I stepped inside Grain, we were drawn to shelves, loaded with decadent nut butters, natural sweeteners, healthy flours, granola mixes and teas. It’s a health foodie’s heaven, to say the least. I also found that the stunning display of eclectic art, décor and furniture inside made for a rather artsy, trendy feel. It’s all simply done, but at the same time, beautiful!

We took a seat at one of the cosy little tables outside and soon enough, our order consisting of two cappuccinos, an all-day breakfast, and an omelette arrived. My dish – the all-day brekkie, was a generous portion of scrambled eggs, bacon, fried tomatoes and mushrooms, with a slice of vegan, gluten-free beetroot bread on the side. It was downright delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful! It was my first time trying out beetroot bread, and I’m still raving about how tasty it was. I’m going to try out their baby marrow bread next!

I was also lucky enough to have a taste of my breakfast companion’s omelette, and am happy to report that it was as fantastic as my meal.  To add, our coffees, brewed by local brand Roast Re:public, were simply top-notch. Overall, my girlfriend and I had a wonderful time at Grain – the food was outstanding, the service quick and friendly, and the atmosphere comfortable and trendy.

I can’t wait to return to try out some of Grain’s other tantalising creations, like their brownie made from baby marrow, gluten-free flour mix and honey, and their pizza made from brown rice and sunflower seed flour.

If you’ve jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon or are simply looking to eat healthier, you’ve got to check out Grain for yourself. You can trust that this well-loved business will soon be making big waves in Jozi’s health food scene!
