I don’t know what it is, but as soon as I think “raw” I think healthy food. Not necessarily tasteless food, but things like chocolate are generally very far from my associations with the terms. I think it has something to do with a mouthful of carob with the expectation of milk chocolate as a child. Carob was “healthy,” therefore all healthy chocolate analogues were gross. WRONG!
My new chocolate fix comes from Fine and Raw and despite it just goes further to show that conscious sourcing and production certainly don’t mean a boring product.

Imagine terms like delicious, morish, rich, complex flavours, wicked and then pair them with the likes of organic, fair trade, sustainable, green and healthy. Chocolate is no longer guilt-implicit! Alert the press! The portions are small, but the flavours are big. If clichés were as up my alley as this chocolate, I would say something about dynamite coming in small packages, but this is to slow and calming to be dynamite. It starts at your lips and slowly envelopes your mouth in that serotonin-rich goodness.

I may sound like I’m trying to lay the foundations for a cult here, but I think that if you’re going to give yourself with the important things in life -like chocolate- you have to have the best and it’s my duty to make sure you know what the best is. So, unless you’re heading off to Paris any time soon, stock up on our local food heroes, starting with Fine and Raw. My favourites have to be the coconut bonbons!

Joburg's Darling Oh dear! I will have to get back to you on that. I got mine from their stand at the Neighbourgoods Market and I have seen them at Voodoo Lily and a few health food stores.
