I’ve always had a super soft spot for live music – there’s just something about watching an artist doing their thing on stage, pouring their heart and soul into their music. Alas, these days there aren’t too many places where you can go to see fabulous artists perform – unless, of course you are happy to brave the sticky floors and hoards of intoxicated people in most live music spots. Call me boring but I’d much rather sit back with a good glass of wine and watch an artist perform from the comfort of an actual chair. Which is why I am so excited about today’s find – it’s a haven for Jazz lovers who want to catch the very best local Jazz artists in the flesh while enjoying a great meal and drinks with friends. So, if you love Jazz music and wine then keep reading because you are going to be positively smitten with brand new Jazz club and bistro, The Orbit!

The Orbit is the brainchild of three local Jazz lovers and previous owners of tiny Jazz club, Peg’s Cosy Corner in Troyeville. The club was famous for offering an intimate spot where Jazz lovers could come together to enjoy a drink while listening to fabulous Jazz tunes. Now, twelve years later the team came together to offer a new kind of Jazz venue in Braamfontein – a spot that would not only offer the best possible platform for jazz musicians in Johannesburg but also give audiences the chance to savour delicious food and drinks while they soak up the tunes. Joburgers can catch live Jazz performances at the venue from 20:30, Tuesday to Sunday every week and enjoy a delicious dinner from the bistro menu while they are at it. Performances are priced from R40 to R120 per night and the full line-up is available on the Orbit website.

I got the chance to visit The Orbit for one of their Saturday Wine Clubs with The Wine School and fell in love with the venue and its food! The Saturday lunch time event allows you to learn more about the world of wine while listening to soulful jazz, and is the perfect way to spend a chilly winter afternoon with friends. I am a huge fan of The Wine School and Janice Scheckter and have written about her Thirsty Thursday events on the blog before, so I jumped at the chance to attend another wine tasting with her! If you didn’t follow my advice and attend a Thirsty Thursdays wine tasting with The Wine School then this is your chance to catch a little bit of Janice’s magic. Her wine tastings are always incredibly relaxed and uncomplicated and you will leave feeling like you’ve learned so much about drinking and buying wine.

The Orbit Wine Club events with The Wine School take place once a month from 12:00 – 14:00, and include a wine tasting of six different wines and a finger food lunch to complement the flavours of the wine. The tasting we attended focused on red wines and we got the chance to sample some incredible wines that I had never come across before. Diners (or rather sippers) also have the chance to enquire about buying the wines after the tasting. The food was also super delicious and we were able to sample a selection of Parma Ham and Fig Bruschetta, Onion and Goat Cheese Tart, Vegetable Spring Rolls and Mushroom and Leek Croquettes as well as a dessert of Tart Tartin and Red Berry Mousse.

The Saturday Wine Club events will set you back R195 per person and tickets can be booked using the contact details in the little pink box in the top right hand corner of this post.
